More than just COVID-19 prevention: Exploring the links between PPE, safe work protocols and workers’ mental health

Peter Smith
Institute for Work & Health

We have heard about the importance of personal protective equipment (PPE) and infection control procedures (ICP) in reducing workplace COVID-19 transmission. A new study, conducted with the Occupational Health Clinics for Ontario Workers (OHCOW), explores their importance in protecting workers’ mental health. In this presentation, Dr. Peter Smith shares results from surveys conducted among health-care workers and the broader Canadian workforce. The findings provide important insights into the additional benefits of workplace infection control practices—beyond reducing COVID-19 transmission.

Dr. Peter Smith is an associate scientific director and a senior scientist at the Institute for Work & Health in Toronto. Smith has extensive experience conducting research on work injury using large population-based surveys.

The Institute for Work & Health is an independent, not-for-profit research organization. The IWH Speaker Series is an opportunity to learn about the latest findings from work and health researchers from the Institute and beyond.
